When you run a business, your circumstances can change.
You might move to a different address, choose a new business name, or change your business’s structure. If any of these things happen, you need to let us know.
Keeping us up to speed with your business lets us get in touch with you if we need to. It also helps you avoid any problems with your tax.
How to update your details
If you change your personal name, business name or address, you need to let us know. This includes your home and business address. Without the right details, important letters might not reach you and you could miss deadlines or tax bills.
The quickest way to do this is online on GOV.UK.
You can update your details for most things this way, including:
- Self Assessment (if you’re self-employed)
- Pay As You Earn (PAYE) (if you employ people)
- Corporation Tax (if you run a limited company)
What to do if you change your business
As your business grows, how you want to set it up might change. You may have started as a limited company but realised a sole trader is a better fit for your business needs. Or maybe you’re about to go into partnership with someone else.
If this happens, you need to do two things:
Step 1: Register the new set-up of your business
Step 2: Tell us you’ve stopped trading as your old business
You can find out how to tell us about any changes to your business on GOV.UK.
If you’re ending a partnership
The person who handles tax (they’re called the ‘nominated partner’) will need to log this on the partnership’s final tax return.
Key thing to remember:
Don’t forget that each partner will still need to send us their tax return for that year.
If you’re setting up, changing or closing a limited company, you need to make sure that you tell Companies House too.
Changing details when you’re VAT-registered
If you’re changing your bank details, let us know at least 14 days before it happens. This will make sure that any VAT payments or refunds go to the right place.
For other changes – like your business name, address, or what your business does – let us know within 30 days. If you let us know too late, you could face a fine.
Keeping us up to date protects you
When we have the right details, it means important information will reach you on time. It’s a small task that can save you bother later. If you need to tell us about a change to your business details, you can do it quickly and securely online on GOV.UK.
